Lang was an accomplished runner, basketball player, handball player and bodybuilder who grew up in Brooklyn, New York. In 1927, while attending Thomas Jefferson High School, he won the New York City one-mile track meet by running a 4.24-minute mile. He also played basketball in high school. During the early 1930’s, he trained with Charles Atlas, who specialized in dynamic tension as a form of bodybuilding. In later years, Lang won several handball championships. For more than 10 years, Lang sponsored the Biddy Basketball League and donated uniforms for the Allan Lang All Stars at the Jewish Community Center of Greater Washington.
