Buddy Myer

Myer, a Jewish boy from a small Mississippi town, had a brilliant 17-year career in the Major Leagues. He played for the Washington Senators for 15 of his 17 seasons. He won the 1935 American League batting title with a .349 batting average while playing second base for the Senators. Myer’s 2,131 career hits are still the most hits ever by a Jewish player in the Major Leagues. His lifetime batting average was a splendid .303. In the mid-1930s, Senators’ owner Clark Griffith said that he would not sell Myer for less than half a million dollars – an incredible amount at the time. Myer is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame located in Israel.
