Considered one of the greatest high school athletes ever in the D.C. school system, Perlo attracted numerous college scholarships. He chose instead to serve in World War II, during which he suffered a leg injury that ended his basketball career. Perlo later served as Director of Community Relations for the former Capital Centre.
