Albert Rosenfield

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Albert “Abe” Rosenfield immigrated to the United States in 1921. Settling in St. Paul, Minnesota, he attended Mechanic Arts where he was an outstanding athlete in both football and basketball. He was named high school All American in both sports and led his teams to state championships. In his senior year, Dutch Bergman, the basketball coach at Catholic University in Wash. DC, offered him a scholarship which he accepted. At CU, he also played both sports. Because of his great strength, agility, and speed, he excelled in whatever position he was asked to play. After graduation, he settled in the Washington area where he was instrumental in introducing softball to DC. He was an incredible pitcher who was equally adept pitching with both hands. In 194 7 he was one of the first inductees into the Washington Softball Hall of Fame. In 1948 he became the basketball coach at CU where he recruited the first black player in the school’s history. In 1980 he was inducted into the CU Athletic Hall of Fame. When his playing days were over, he turned his attention to the business world and local politics. He was a successful businessman and a dedicated member of the DC Board of Education. He received numerous awards and honors for his accomplishments and leadership in both the business world and civic affairs.
