Matt Mervis grew up in Potomac, Maryland and visited the JCC with his grandmother, Nana, as a kid.

For high school, Matt attended Georgetown Preparatory School and was the only Jewish student in his graduating class. He was a captain of the Prep baseball team and played three years of varsity baseball as a two-way player.

In the summer of 2016 summer, Matt was an All Star in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League for the Silver Spring Thunderbolts. He played baseball at Duke University as a two way player from 2017 to 2020, and was elected a team captain in 2020. His team won the 2018 Athens Regional and 2019 Morgantown regional, falling just short of the College World Series twice in his career.

During the summer of 2019, Matt played for the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod League, where he was named to the All Star and All League teams, along with winning the league championship.

After the shortened 2020 college season, Matt signed a professional contract with the Chicago Cubs. In 2022, his second year in the minor leagues, he was named the Chicago Cubs Minor League Player of the Year after leading the minor leagues with 78 extra base hits and 119 RBIs. He made his Major League debut for the Cubs on May 5, 2023, shortly after competing in the World Baseball Classic with Team Israel.

Matt says that it has been an honor to compete with the best Jewish baseball players in the world on a global stage and to represent his family and friends.
