Silverman began playing baseball at the age of 13, when he organized the Heinie Manush Peewees. Later, he pitched for George Washington University, a semi-pro team, and two Washington amateur adult-league championship teams. Before and after military service, he pitched professionally for Williamsport (PA) in the Western League (Class A) and then for Buffalo, Toronto and Syracuse in the International League (Triple A). In 1949 he helped pitch Buffalo to its first pennant in 13 years.
