While attending Central, HighSchool, Heft was a pitcher on the All-High and All-League Baseball teams. In 1938, he signed and played with the International League until an injury forced his retirement in 1943. In 1942, Heft began officiating college and professional basketball. He refereed in the NBA from its inception (1946) until 1961. From 1963-1968, Heft owned an interest in the Baltimore Bullets basketball franchise and from 1972-1974, was a partner and director of the Washington Capitals Hockey Team.
