Heft was recognized as one of the great sportswriters in the country. After writing for The Washington Post and The Sporting News (St. Louis), he returned to the Washington area to serve as the highly successful public relations director for the Washington Senators. He went to Minneapolis with the Senators in 1960. When the National Baseball League expanded in 1963 Herb became the first Public Relations Director of the New York Mets. He went on to serve as Executive Vice President of the Baltimore Bullets.
