Washington’s pre-eminent boxer in the 1930’s, Gevinson compiled the most successful amateur record in D.C. boxing history, winning five Golden Glove titles from 1931 through 1936. He was selected to the U.S. Olympic Boxing Team as an alternate featherweight competitor in 1936; however, he refused to participate in the Berlin games as a matter of principle. Before retiring from professional boxing in 1939, Gevinson fought three world champions.
