Shirley Pavich is honored for his distinguished career as a sports journalist. Becoming the youngest sports editor in America at age 20, Povich turned his 60-year long association with The Washington Post into “one big love affair” with faithful readers. His column “This Morning with Shirley Povich” ran from 1926 through 1974, interrupted only while Povich served as a World War II war correspondent. Columnist Bob Considine wrote, “Povich has an absolute command over that most formidable of foes, the simple declarative sentence.” Povich’s life, like his work, has served as an example of clarity, style, grace, and wit.
